Reformation Reading Challenge

Reformation Reading Challenge
Posted on January 10, 2017  in Book Reviews and Recommendations
As 2017 marks 500 years since the Reformation (Luther nailing the 95 Theses on the Castle Church door at Wittenberg; October 31, 1517), I (Caleb) have decided to steer my reading towards the subject of this important historical event. Here are thirteen books that I intend to read, this year, in order to learn more about the tremendous events surrounding the Reformation.
Here is how my 2017 Reformation Reading Plan works: I plan to read 13 books related to the Reformation this year. I will read one book per month and take the entire year to read Calvin’s Institutes.
Here is my list. 1, 2, 5, and 6 can be found in our church library…
1/ Institutes of Christian Religion – John Calvin (year long)
2/ Rescuing the Gospel – Erwin Lutzer
3/ The Unquenchable Flame: Discovering the Heart of the Reformation – Michael Reeves
4/ The Reformation in England – J.H. Merle d’Aubigne (2 volumes, one per month)
5/ Calvin – Bruce Gordon
6/ Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther – Roland Bainton
7/ Luther: Man between God and the Devil – Heiko A. Oberman
8/ Theology of the Reformers – Timothy George
9/ William Tyndall: A Biography – David Daniell
10/ Biblical Authority After Babel: Retrieving the Solas in the Spirit of Mere Protestant     Christianity – Kevin J. Vanhoozer
11/ A biography on a lesser know reformer to be selected after I have some Reformation reading under my belt
12/ A book on the Solas
13/ Bonus: A book published on the Reformation in 2017
What an opportunity we have to become better acquainted with an integral part of Church history! So much of what our church enjoys today (a bible that we can read, services in our own language, etc…) is owed to the events surrounding the Reformation. Let’s not let this year slip by without remembering the Reformation! I challenge you to read at least one book on this topic in 2017.
If you are interested in reading a Reformation book, but are unsure about which one to pick up, take a look at numbers 2, 3 and 6; I guarantee that you will enjoy whichever of these you decide to read. These books will teach you about the significance of the reformation and encourage you in so many ways.
Happy reading!
